HRCI Credit Applied For
As much as we like to think of ourselves as logical, rational people, the truth is we're not always aware of what motivates many of the decisions we make. Unconscious bias based on impermissible things such as race, gender, age, religion, and disability can influence many of the employment decisions managers and supervisors make. Promoting a respectful workplace, a level playing field for all, should be the goal of management and employees. Do you know that a respectful workplace begins with the person in charge? It includes a review of the position to be filled, hiring practices and policies and the interview process. The presentation will highlight the laws enforced by EEOC, a discussion of unconscious bias, use of social media in hiring, and employment practices for employees and employers to consider. Tydell N. Whitfield has been the Outreach Program Manager for the New Orleans Field Office (NOFO) of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) since May 1997. She has worked as Education Liaison for the Navy Recruiting Command in their Houston and New Orleans District Offices, a Curriculum Developer for Navy Technical Training Schools and briefly worked for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Orleans as the Training Officer. In addition to serving as Outreach Program Manager for EEOC, Ms. Whitfield is the Small Business Liaison and Training Officer for the office’s staff. She plans and coordinates the annual Technical Assistance Program Seminar (TAPS) and all the Customer Specific Training (CST) offered to the public by the office. Ms. Whitfield received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA and a Master of Education from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, FL.
